License to Catch: How to Prepare for Your Guided Trip on Lake Conroe

As a guest of M.O.A. Guide Services, you will be fishing in the freshwater environment of Lake Conroe. Below is a breakdown of the requirements to ensure your group is prepared before meeting Captain Okey Grimm at the dock.

Who Needs a License?

In Texas, any person (resident or non-resident) aged 17 and older must possess a valid fishing license with a freshwater endorsement to fish in public waters. This applies whether you are keeping your catch or practicing catch-and-release.

2026 License Pricing

Texas offers several "packages" that bundle the license with the necessary endorsements. For a trip on Lake Conroe, a Freshwater Package is typically all you need.

License Type Texas Resident Non-Resident

Annual Freshwater Package $30.00 $58.00

One-Day All-Water License $11.00 $16.00

Senior Freshwater Package (65+) $12.00 N/A

Pro Tip: If you are visiting from out of state for a single day, the One-Day All-Water License is the most cost-effective option and is valid for any legal species in Lake Conroe.

Special Exemptions

  • Youth: Anyone under the age of 17 (resident or non-resident) does not need a fishing license.
  • Seniors: Texas residents born before January 1, 1931, are exempt from license requirements. Residents 65+ qualify for the discounted "Senior" rates listed above.
  • Disability: Texas residents with certain intellectual disabilities or those who are legally blind may qualify for a "Special Resident" license at a reduced cost ($7.00).
  • Military: Active-duty Texas residents on leave may be exempt; please check current TPWD guidelines for documentation requirements.

Where to Buy Your License

Getting your license is quick and can be done in minutes via the following methods:

  1. Online: Visit the Texas Parks and Wildlife (TPWD) website. You can save a digital copy to your phone, which is legally valid for inspection.
  2. Local Retailers: You can purchase a license in person at most sporting goods stores (like Academy Sports or Walmart) and many local bait shops around Willis and Conroe.
  3. By Phone: Call TPWD at (800) 895-4248 during regular business hours.

Freshwater vs. Saltwater Rules

Since Lake Conroe is an inland freshwater body, a Freshwater Endorsement is required. If you plan to head to the coast later in your trip, you would need a Saltwater Endorsement. The "All-Water" packages cover both, providing the most flexibility for travelers.

Ready to hit the water? Once you have your license secured, you are all set for a productive day. Would you like me to send you a pre-trip checklist of other items to bring, like sunscreen and snacks?
